Throughout this course there has been two poems that have affected me. These two poems are "I felt a funeral in my brain" by Emily Dickinson and "Dreams" by Langston Hughs. These two poems touched me because they are both poems that reflect what I have felt in the past.
The first poem, "I felt a funeral in my brain", touched me because there have been times in my life when my mind became numb from all of the craziness and stress. I tried to wake myself up just like the poem when the narrator heard the "drumming of the mourners feet" but the "soft, steady words of the preacher" put me in my stupor again. And when that happened i too fell and watched the worlds, day to day, go by until i hit rock bottom and had to pick myself up again. This poem hits really close to home because it reminds me of a time when I, myself felt a funeral in my brain.
The second poem "Dreams" touched me because I agree with all the words that poem says. I too feel that people should hold onto dreams becuase they will sit and die like the "broken-winged bird". I also agree that "life becomes like a field frozen with snow" when you have no dreams. I classify myself as a dreamer and this poem hits to the very core of the mentality. Without dreams I wouldn't be here in this school. I would be at some little community college getting a degree in something quick and easy but I chose to follow my dreams and go to culinary school so I could become something more than ordinary.
